The Travel Tech Revolution: How Businesses can Ride the Wave

Chris Barker is a seasoned digital leader with over 25 years’ experience across travel, leisure, and marketing. Known for driving transformation, launching impactful digital products, and leading high-performing teams, he blends strategic vision with handson delivery. With a strong focus on customer experience and commercial performance, Chris brings deep expertise in digital product, marketing, and change leadership across both corporate and SME environments.

In recent years, we have seen a surge of innovation reshaping the travel industry. Emerging technologies like AI, real-time data analytics and cloud-native platforms are beginning to transform the travel industry, but they have yet to be fully embedded into its core operations - presenting both a challenge and a significant opportunity for forward-thinking businesses. What was once a manual, fragmented process is now evolving into something far more connected, scalable, and intelligent.

But as we embrace these technologies, one of the most important questions is: how should they be leveraged to ensure the individual, personal and human nature of travel remains present?

A balancing act: technology versus the human touch

At its heart, travel is deeply personal. It is built on trust, connection, and the memories of exploring the world. Today’s travellers expect this same sense of care and personalisation throughout their journey - from the first spark of inspiration to the moment they return home. Delivering on that expectation requires more than digital capability. It takes a user-first mindset and a commitment to ensuring that every innovation enhances the experience, not dilutes or detracts from it.

Businesses that adopt a thoughtful mindset - choosing not to chase technology for novelty’s sake, but innovate with intent, developing tools and platforms that deliver tangible value to their community and customers, will see long-term success over short-lived quick wins.

For example, here at Travel Counsellors, our recently launched ‘interactive itineraries’ do just that by transforming static travel documents into rich, multimedia experiences. Built in-house, this innovation does not just modernise documentation; it elevates the way our business owners engage with their customers, enabling more intuitive, personalised trip planning from start to finish.

We are also investing in AI through tools like TC Co-Pilot, our proprietary assistant that surfaces tailored travel suggestions based on individual booking patterns, customer behaviour and preferences. Crucially, this is not designed to replace human expertise; it is built to enhance it. AI should serve as the engine powering smarter decisions, not the driver steering the experience. AI’s true value lies in surfacing insight and tangible productivity gains, while keeping the human touch at the heart of outstanding customer service.

Data and platform thinking

Of course, intelligent tools are only part of the equation. To unlock their full potential, businesses need robust digital foundations. That means modular architecture, service-oriented platforms, and products that respond directly to the needs of real users.

Data plays a crucial role in this ecosystem. When surfaced in the right way, it shifts from a static reporting function to a source of strategic insight. Whether it is tracking carbon impact or understanding booking behaviour, a meaningful data-driven insight empower smarter client decisions and reduces the manual workload for travel professionals. With the right platforms in place, data can move from a reporting requirement to a strategic asset, helping teams focus on where they add the most value.

A look ahead: the future of travel

We are entering a new chapter in travel defined by the ‘connected trip’ - where every part of the journey, from flights and accommodation to transfers and activities, is seamlessly integrated and automatically updated. While many businesses are just beginning to explore this model, for us it is already in motion. Through our proprietary digital, personal platform, Phenix, our travel advisors can effortlessly create bespoke, complex, multi-centre itineraries with greater speed and flexibility, especially when it comes to corporate travel management, which can often see lastminute amendments, postponements and cancellations dependent on client preferences.

AI should serve as the engine powering smarter decisions, not the driver steering the experience

This is not just a story of digital transformation – it is a fundamental shift in how travel is imagined and experienced. The businesses that lead would not be the ones chasing every new bonus tool or feature, but those building with intention: solutions that scale, adapt, and keep human connection at the core.

For us, that means developing technology that empowers people, enabling travel professionals to work smarter, build deeper relationships, and focus on what really matters.

Because riding the wave of travel tech is not just about moving fast. It is about moving with purpose and always putting people first.
